Turok: Evolution .tre Extractor
« on: August 11, 2017, 05:57:13 PM »
Basically, in early 2017, i found the creator of a Turok: Evolution Russian patch and decided to ask him how he changed the voices.
He explained that he made his own tool and that he used that to create the mod. He also mentioned that its compatible with Xbox and PS2, but as far as i know, not GameCube.
So i asked if i could have it. He asked me for 15$ for the tool. At first i was hesitant and was considering some things but than i thought to myself, this is one of the best bets we have in modding Turok: Evolution on consoles.

We move on February 10th, 2017 and i give him the money. I received the tool shortly after. Things seem great so far, right? Wrong. Things all went downhill from there.

I downloaded the tool, almost jumping from excitement, when i was sadly met with dissapointing results. The tool was absolutely useless! It was the same as the QuickBMS thats around on the internet!
I immediately contacted him and asked whats up with the tool and why it only extracted .bin files. (In my eyes, garbage data.)
He said the tool works fine. So i asked him, thinking i missed something, if he could give me some instructions. He than sent me this:

"Здравствуйте!

One tool for unpack, and one for repack. Look, thing, and only after that panic.
Read what I wrote in previous letters. TRE haven't filenames, only hashs. If you want to replace files inside, you MUST name files for replace same name (hash+".bin"), place it in same dir where you work with TRE and run repacker, that make new TRE."

And than it hit me. I wasted 15$ for a worthless tool. I asked him for a refund as his tool didnt do what was promised, and he said this:
"Use Total Commander's viewer to identify by eyes. RTFM."
Read the fucking manual? What the FUCK! There wasnt one included!

He THAN proceeded to call me a fucking LIAR!:
"While you are lame user any tool is trash for you, like a grenade for a monkey.
I think you a liar - you lie that you are modder (advanced user required) or you lie that tool is not work for getting tool for free.
Moneyback is not an option, because you have tool and that fact you deleted all it copies unprovable.
You have only one solution - increase your knowledge about computers, you may go to school or ask some adult person in home to help.

Now I go to rec video that prove I replaced all English speech to Russian in game by my tool, and upload it to YouTube. BTW, it proves that you are liar."

Wow. Just wow. He sent me a so called auto .wav detector but the shit doesnt even fucking work. It had a readme. The readme said this:

"This method is very useful when you working with files in Total Commander. Not in Windows Explorer, that made for lame housewives!
RTFM for Total Commander and levelup yourself."

At this point i had enough and waited almost the entire year for a refund that never came. So heres my fucking revenge, you scamming Russian piece of shit.

Ladies and Gentlemen, i present to you: The tool!

If you want to look through thousands of files 10530 or more files depending on the version, and hand pick each file and file out what the fuck it is and try to edit it, have fun with the tool. If not, i dont blame you. This tool is fucking useless.  :turok:

Picture of the fuckers desktop, demonstrating how to use the tool. (By hand picking thousands of files... PFFT! Fuck you!)

Great you shared his tool, but might it be posible that his usage of total commander is just enough to quickly find he right files and edit them?
under linux you have commands like "find" and "grep". you can even do regex operations, so I asume this rusian guy uses equivelent total commander tools to quickly find the files he wanted to edit, made some lists of these files and then manualy edited them, copy replaced the files, packed it all and tested the game?

Looks very short, handy and why bother making a stupid GUI for if this just works?

Ow wait, till some noob will ask for your tool and wants to extract files... owman, you know me a bit, Im that dude with Linux and commandline tools. I dont think that guy ment bad for you at first. maybe the communication went downhill, but 15 euro is a bit high for something that might be easier. a donation would have been better or something. Im no expert (and I send you the link on discord) isnt this like the same file structure as: http://forum.xentax.com/viewtopic.php?f=10&t=3881 discussed here?

not sure for the windows version but under linux, " grep -rnw '.' -e 'uptime' "  lists every file that contains the text uptime (the dot means all files from current folder and deeper, replace with / for the root of the OS or "grep -rnw '/home/dimomite/porn/turok_beta/' -e 'prototype'  " will search for the word prototype in your secret prototype folders. maybe this: https://blogs.technet.microsoft.com/heyscriptingguy/2016/06/27/use-windows-powershell-to-search-for-files/
and no, not all searches posibilities can be writen to a GUI for if you need to change the search algoritm you need to recompile the tool again. I kinda like the idea of having a tool thats good in 1 thing and only 1 thing. then use excisting other tools to do the other things. (AAAAnnd,.. you can reversengineer his tool now way more easely)

Anyway, another tool to our arsenal of tools.

That's the point, Nico... This tool does nothing more than the QuickBMS script thats for free and that is why im so dissapointed in it. While theoretically you CAN look out for any files that you're looking for with some stuff, almost nobody knows how to use Total Commander in the fucking world and its tedious to hand pick thousands of files for maybe a few hundred actual voice clips. If you want to help with it, i would appreciate it. I think with the efforts of us all, it'd take a lot less time to get all the files we need, and seeing how the betas use this file archive too, we could extract even more unseen stuff.

Good news, everyone! CodeAsm has helped me and has extracted the voices, and changed them to their original extension. (.wav)
A big chunk is already dumped, but when everything will be done, i will pack it into a .rar file for all to use and make a video on it.

In my honest opinion, CodeAsm deserves all the credit for doing this, but in his own words he said that if i hadn't wasted 15 Euros on the tool, we would be nowhere.

Heres a sneak peak:

Also, some stuff is slowed down or differently pitched than in the game. I assume its because the game automatically regulates it to the pitch it wants.

What really gets ya is that you have to weed through all the voice clips in multiple languages. :V

I haven't been messing around with this for too long today, but I might have found an unused line each from Bruckner, Tyrannus, and Tarkeen. Link

Well, I'm not too sure on the Bruckner line. I don't remember ever hearing it, and it sounds like it might be left over from when the boss fight was multi-stage.

And now that I think about it, I'm not sure on the Tyrannus one either. The whole "we are the sacred blade, we are the holy fire" thing sounds pretty familiar. Maybe it's just from a random Sleg, idk lol

Point is, the Tarkeen line is new.

EDIT: o hay a thing happened while i was posting stuff

I think i found unused Bruckner and Tyrannus lines, "Today we begin our historic march towards Galyanna, the fabled city of light!"

If it's Tyrannus, it might be from the post-Suspended City cutscene. All of the cutscene dialogue is in there, sometimes multiple times. I've seen Tarkeen's Lost Land speech from the opening represented twice now.

Such nice voices. :want: Dubbing actors are still unknown?
