Title: Turok Modding on the Nintendo Switch First Peeks
Post by: Badger on September 21, 2019, 07:43:34 PM
So I'm sitting minding my own business today when my good friend "poof spell" messages me that he's been able to access files on his switch recently! Moreover, he was going to see if he could put in mods on his Switch version of Turok! You cannot believe the excitement I had, so I walked him through it and gave him mods to try out. Here's the results:

Our first success! We were able to get the Hi-Rez Water mod to work!

We tried to get Turok+ running, but he only got a black screen after the loading splash, and he was not able to get a keyboard working to get into console, unfortunately.

But, we managed to get Openworld working:

Except it didn't really work, and instead did something VERY bizarre.

Poof and I have our own theories on what happened here, but we're not 100% sure lol.

This does not mean that custom maps/campaigns are impossible, we used Jay Doom's vanilla Demon Village, which worked out just fine!

Thanks for reading and leave your thoughts below :)

Special Thanks to Poof Spell, while not a Turok modder, has become the first known player to mod Turok on the Switch. Thanks for helping us out pal!

If you want to be able to mod the switch yourself, well, I don't really know how to do that exactly. You will need an unlockable 1st gen switch with firmware that hasn't been updated, you will also have to follow a guide such as this: https://nh-server.github.io/switch-guide/

Nice, I guess some of my levels would work on Switch then.

It'd be dope if we occasionally tested and certified certain Turok mods or maps as working on the Switch.

Really cool stuff to see here, I love crazy hacking and homebrew. I really do wonder if its possible to get script mods working. I'd totally spend all night working on this if I had a Switch.

So some discoveries that we've made:

-some models accept larger custom textures, some models do not. We currently do not understand what qualifies a model to accept larger resolution custom textures or not. Either way, you are still able to have custom textures on all models as long as you keep the textures at the vanilla size/resolution.

-you are able to have custom models (no difficulties noted so far)

-scripts can work as well, we just do not know to what extent they work.

Thanks to poof spell and Doommarine for making the main modding discoveries thus far, very glorious  :treasure:

Sorry it's been a while since I posted and not much has been discovered since last time. BP made a version of the Map Jam that does indeed work on the Switch version. Download it on the Sanctum page: https://turoksanctum.com/turok-map-jam/
