Title: Why Turok 3: Shadow of Oblivion is my favorite Turok game
Post by: Ravenfreak on October 19, 2015, 12:49:24 AM
So it seems that most fans don't really care for this title as much as the other ones... I for one, think Shadow of Oblivion is the best Turok game. See I love how you have a choice between two different characters, and each character has their own set of weapons plus they take different paths. I also love the soundtrack the most. Plus I really love the story line too, and seeing how the Flesh Eaters are my favorite characters from the Turok series, this game is epic since it's based around them. xD I just wish it got a PC port... :\ I would have loved to play in some deathmatches with people online, and the game would have run a bit smoother on the PC as well. I can't be the only one who loves Turok 3 here right? :P

You are surely not the only fan of Turok 3. There just hasn't been much to talk about with it lately. I love the weapons and how each character has different paths also. Its a good game that should of been ported to PC, I personally don't understand why they strayed away from the pc ports on there later games...

Wish that it got a PC port as well. 100% agree on it having better controls if it were on PC but I am fine with the 64 version but a PC port would of opened more options for fans and mp possibilities. Turok 3 is a good game all the weapons and and scenes are crazy and big. Also, the fog limits were better then the limits in Turok 1 and Turok 2.

I like every Turok game tbh. Also, would like to point out that T3 had one of the best bosses I've ever seen in all games.

Welcome :) and no your not the only one who likes Turok 3 its like Adon said not many conversations brought up about it to discuss it. I 100% agree with Rok also Oblivion is one of the most bad ass bosses there is around period not just n Turok games.

Turok 3 is certainly a good game on it's own merits. I feel it's mostly overlooked for two reasons: One,  It came out near the end of the N64's lifespan, when most people's attention were on the upcoming consoles. Two, it's the single furthest departure from Turok's roots. Turok is about a native american fighting dinosaurs, pretty much every adaptation of the story/character since the 1950's heavily focused on this... except for Shadow of Oblivion (well, and the short-lived Dark Horse comics). It's like Halo without aliens, or DOOM without demons. I'm not saying this in itself is a negative thing, but it can be a turn off for some people. I remember my dad renting the game from Blockbuster right when it came out, and quitting after an hour of fighting zombies and dogs (hey, that just meant I got to play it instead!).

Anyways, yeah, the Flesh Eaters are metal as fuck. The segments where you fought them in Turok 2 were some of my favorite parts of that game, it was really neat to see them develop into the primary threat. Having the choice of two protagonists with different weapons/abilities is always a nice choice, even if I pretty much only choose Danielle. I'd say more shooters should take a stab at that, but a good deal of them have a hard enough time creating one interesting/entertaining protagonist!

Turok 3 is certainly a game I hold very dear despite showing signs of being rushed and being so far off the Turok roots. It improved in some regards from T2, but I enjoyed the level design and overall more streamlined gameplay and faster pacing. The concept of two characters each having their own route, special item, and weapons upgrades is one I really like as well. And the weapon selection, while not he best of the series still had high points. I mean Cerebral Processor, PSG, Fireswarm, Shredder, and Vampire Gun; good stuff.

The enemy design is very interesting as well, most enemies feel like cryptic creatures or Lovecraftian monstrosities. I also liked some of the returning enemies more than their T2 counterparts, particularly the raptors which are more faster and agile, and the Fireborn Magmites which actually throw and bleed fire.

I only wish that this game was also getting a HD remaster as well.

A remaster probably could help this game a ton! I mean putting it on pc would make it 10 times better alone :)

Definitely. It's such a shame that this game didn't get a PC port because I am pretty sure that if it wasn't for that, we would surely have a Turok 3 HD Remaster alongside T1 and T2. I enjoy playing it on my N64, but the lag can sometimes spoil the fun a little bit. I can only assume that taking the data inside a N64 rom would involve some copyright issue so we would probably have to settle with no HD remaster, unless a fan does it for free. Or maybe someone pulls off a DOOM 64 EX for Turok 3...

Kaiser is the guy who can do it maybe if we have enough support and demand for Turok 3 they would do that to? I for one would 100% support it if T3 came out. Also, Rage wars and Evolution! Full Turok revival :D I wish

It would surely excite me if Turok 3 would get a port maybe if Turok 1 and 2 do great it could become a consideration? Then it could continue to the next we got to support these games ladies and gents so buy 10 copies each of Turok when it comes out :)

Dude your trippin T2 does need a new port nobody wants to run 3dfx and old win 95/98 games. They wont last for much longer if they don't get the proper treatment. The remasters could last forever especially if they have level editors. I personally want them to last forever and ever.

I also hope they would port Turok 3, Turok Rage Wars, and Evolution

Dinomite probably just saying that because people do still play the old one a bit and its way more then the amount playing t1. But I do agree we need a version that can age on from here.

Well everyone has opinions that's all and that's fine. I would really like to see a T2 remaster though  after playing Turok 1 the game feels more free motion. Old felt stuck and wonky can't lie I would like this upgrade to go into Turok 2 :)

Some years ago i would had tought this was terribly wrong, but the more i played all 3 n64 games, the more T2 falls behind the other 2 games, besides graphics and creativity.

T3 actually had some cool things to it, like no look-spring in any form.

All the weapons were powerfull, minus the vampire gun. I really loved that i always had something to rely on, even if it was the melee weapons which was powerful enough.

The option to turn auto-aim on/off is what i would had wanted in t2. its a switch between the option to be able to shoot any limb at will, or only get torso shots for moderate damage (kinda).

Other than that the graphics were lazy (not bad, lazy. as in, sitcking a box with a lighting .gif on a shotgun and calling it the Shredder) and the stage were almost completely linear, yet hard. It was definitely much more easier to replay than t2 even with its setbacks.

It would be so cool if they did Turok 3 after Turok 2 because Turok 3 was a good game it just got overshadowed because they released it so late and the N64 was becoming old. So most gamers had moved on and this game didn't get all the players it should have got. It actually has some interesting stuff in this game. And if I remember correctly you have to collect pieces for the gun again like in Turok 1. Well maybe if 1 and 2 do good for them they can consider T3 :) I would like to play this with smooth mouse controls it would be awesome!

Well in my case I never got T3 because T2 drove me away alittle from the series with its slower pace, not to mention I sucked at FPS as a kid.

Quote

Yeah, The PSG. After the fiasco that was The Nuke in T2, this one was awesome.

I definitely agree, it would be awesome if T3 (and rage wars) got a remaster too.

All they would have to do is make the controls better, increase performance, and maybe include adjustable fov and bang the game could be better. Since Turok 3 and Rage Wars are only console it may be more work just to get them. Those two games may be more compatible to another because of that though. I would like to see Turok 3 also.

Well, on an emulator you can make T3 and rage wars play as a modern fps after configuring controls a little.

So far the only way known for extracting 3d models from n64 games is trough a plugin (nemmy's plugin). not that hard at all, but the extracted model needs some tweaking so it looks like in the game.

Maybe it mostly just depends on demand now huh? Also, how well T1 and T2 do could be the life line to more I suppose.

Problem is that the game is only available on the n64. As far as i know you can rip 3D models, textures and probaly sounds&music too. However I do not know of any way to import animations.

I would love to see Turok 3 Remastered, but i think it'll be more difficult due to a few reasons.

1. Since most likely it would be rebuilt from the ground up, it would probably take as long if not longer than Turok 2.

2. Porting it from N64 to PC would be a bit tougher than porting DOOM 64.

3. For the most part, the game was rushed, so there would probably be issues with the source code when rebuilding the game, and since the multiplayer was local only, adding an online component would take longer to create.

So in general, i would love to see the game be ported or remastered on PC, but i do feel it'll take a long time before we'll be able to play it, that's if it'll happen.

Yeah if Turok 3 comes out do we really need the mp? Idk if many would actually play the mp. Turok 3 should just be SP and let Turok 2 and Rage Wars do the mp talking!! But it would be cool to see the mp also I just don't know if it would actually be worth the pain. I mean die hard Turok fans would appreciate it very much! But I just don't see it getting much general play on the mp.

As for the sp game it shouldn't be that hard though, they could use Turok 2's kex engine and poke at it to match Turok 3. Its a matter of exporting everything from N64 and making everything align up in code on kex. Still a complicated task but Kaiser could do it.

Another thing I would like to point out that might be hard to do for T3: The fact that you have to deal with two separate characters, weapons, and campaigns :O That might be something really tough that could result in tangling scripts and wacky stuff. I can just picture bugs showing up everywhere on both stories xD

Upon taking the time to go into the game again, i also remembered a few other things.

1. There are a lot of cut features from the game, so if Night Dives wants to add those back in, it'll take time to put those back in place, especially as stated previously, there's 2 sides to the same campaign, so adding weapons and such back into the game, it's a bit of a challenge to see what'll fit.

2. As stated, the multiplayer will need a netcode to be online (most likely using steam's naitive multiplayer servers or GoG Galaxy), and some of the arenas don't appear to look like they'll handle more than four players (Shipping and Receiving i'm looking at you), so having upwards of 8-16 players could be difficult unless there's an overhaul to some of the levels.

3. The single player campaign would also require some redesigns for new features (may not be a surprise considering the changes with Turoks 1 and 2) and visuals. The weapons could also use a few more touch ups, but what i would like to see is Joshua's playable form to have his own dialogue (as he mostly uses Danielle's dialogue, though i believe he uses some of Joseph's lines as well), but i know for that to happen, the original voice actor for Joshua would have to come back, and i'm not sure if he's still around, or at least willing to revoice him if given the option.

The original voice actor is still around! Duke64 spoke to him not to long ago ;) But would he be up to do more Turok voice acting is the real question. That was years ago now so idk if he still would want to do more Turok :) Sounds good. Man Turok 3 would be nice to get.

i still hope to see him play Joshua again. Joshua was my favorite among the playable characters, but the only thing i didn't really like was that Joshua had Danielle's lines, which to me was a bit odd. I also found that in chapter 1, you find he doesn't even have his own model, just has Danielle in front, Joseph in back, which is both hilarious, and jarring. So i'm hoping that if the guy comes back for Turok 3 Remastered, is to have lines recorded for Joshua ingame as well as cutscenes, and have Joshua's playable form have his own model.

My two cents.

The game should have multiplayer; if talking about dedicated servers, they can share T2 servers I think.
Some say this would divide the community but then again, what community? you play to have fun, and if you have more fun playing T3 mp you play that. I dont care since the main point of the Turok games is the singleplayer experience. Except for rage wars obviously...

My main interests to see if T3 ever gets a remaster are related to visuals and gameplay. Mostly additions like blood particles from enemies' severed limbs, a better vanish effect for dead bodies, more health for enemies and more of them on higher difficulties.
The removed content Im all in for it.

I would also say an option to toggle weapon models for their better-looking versions but im not sure if theres enough to justify such option (Its mostly all about the shotgun "upgrades")

I would love to play Turok 3 on PC my only suggestion would be to make the editor available like it is in T2. As I'm sure that other stuff like make the game at 60 fps etc etc would be taken care of. Would be great to play that one since it was never on PC. And I definitely do not want to play on a freaking emulator lol I'll pass. I would rather play it on my N64 100% over that. The game would be good for pc same with RW.

Because of GOG not having drm, they earn no moneh whatsoever and their installers get uploaded onto free games websites and torrents without even trying. Nothing is keeping them from doing it, and therefore once one person gets it, EVERYONE gets it. You think all the crazy sales and prices are to be nice? Fuck no! They are to entice people into actually using their service! They earn so little that they have to make the prices small because when the price is a teensie bit too high, people resort to PirateBay.

So everyone shut the fuck up about how either GOG or Steam is better, or i will fucking Doxx you like a fish.
They both have their fair share of good and bad things, but in the end, you still have fun with both. So zip your fucking lips, ungrateful pig fuckers.

P.S. If you hate the drm so much, just launch Steam with automatic login. Doesnt take a goddamn genius to figure it out.

He didn't say steam was bad though he just mentioned the fact of drm and that he wanted to own it on GOG and I do also. That's the problem for me I don't want to be forced to open a separate program to play my games. Only time I even launch steam is if a friend wants me to play with them, and then I exit. Other than that ehh rather play Doom 64 ex, gzdoom, eduke32, and turok (on gog). I only have Turok on steam because 64 gifted me I would never buy a game on it.

As for the people who do torrents well they're low live sacks of shit who should probably go get a job instead of searching around for a free game LMFAO shit is lame as hell I hope they get a virus. People like me wish to buy the game and support the devs but at the same time wish to actually own the game.

Only people who argue between steam and gog are steam people. They have to try and convince everyone so hard. Meanwhile I just say "have fun playing steam but i'm good I like gog sorry" I didn't say steam was bad I just said thank GOD they also put there games on gog. Otherwise i'll pass and play T3 on N64 or even an emu. Steam is just not for me no hate I just don't like it myself my opinion.

Well I didn't say steam was bad. I only said i hope they release to gog. I do want Turok 3 but if I had to play on Steam. I will probably just pass and play on N64 again. Only because I dont have steam and I dont want it. I have had so many steam users trying to tell me why steam is better and they try shoving it down my throat. For that reason and the fact of drm I wont ever be on steam. That doesn't mean I dont want T3 I just dont want to be forced to buy it on steam. I want to place Turok 3 in my Turok folder with the first two remasters and play alone without launching an extra program.

I never said its better, and the amount of people telling you its better is probably 5 at most.
I like them equally and people should learn to do tge same, that is what i said.

Maybe a few people here which I dont mind honestly but it happens a lot more outside the forum i never understood why I cant just like something else better dont mean to sound rude to steam players but some steam players are douche bags like gaben is god master race blah blah :(  I have news for them gog is also pc. Anyways.. dont want to derail the topic so far away. If Turok 3 only came to steam I would 100% still support that and the efforts to get it there. I just hope gog is considered still which nds seems to do and its something i really like about them even there new system shock will go there. Overall I just hope T3 is considered its a bit of a pain to play it on n64 or emulation. Turok 3 ex would be monumental imo.

Lots of people only played the start- well you have to play that game in full to see. The starting level doesn't do a great job of an introduction to me. Not use to Turok in the city but it was still cool. The levels change up more down the way without seeing all settings of a Turok game you miss alot more than a usual game goes for all Turok games though. There's a small level list they are very important all to get a feel different atmospheres etc etc. The game was good but they did lose some of that raw Turok feeling at the same time. But I think it could even be more appreciated now more than before. The first two were already very very appreciated and loved on N64 and PC.

If and when they port T3 to PC, I would love to see as much BETA content as possible.

There's more stuff hidden behind the May 2000 BETA which is most likely only accessible through reverse engineering.
