Why Isn't TUROK popular
« on: May 17, 2017, 02:41:02 PM »
Lets be honest here, why isn't Turok as popular as other franchise. They have everything ranging from Comics, Toys, School Books, Books, Video-Games, stamps, a street named after Turok even clothing!.
I cant not wrap my head around this, how can this IP not be as Popular as Banjo Kazooie, 007 Golden Eye or Metroid. The lack of Fan-Art is really crushing to me......

What are your taught about this.

On the console side: Goldeneye had already established itself as a party game powerhouse by the time T2 came out.  Turok's controls were considered hard to use compared to Rare's games.  Quality issues due to Acclaim's deadlines (e.g., T2's framerate issues, Evolution's general lack of polish).

On the PC side: overshadowed by Quake, Unreal, and Half-Life.

After T1 made such a splash, I think Acclaim should've given the Turok team more leeway on the sequels to really cement the franchise as an FPS staple, but it seems like Acclaim was too cheap to properly invest in their own properties.  I think Acclaim viewed the Turok games the same way TV execs viewed Saturday morning cartoons: cheap tie-ins to sell merchandise (toys and comics).  That the games are as good as they are is a testament to the devs at Iguana.

I'd say a mix of what Smoke said and I think just other factors as well. Turok 1 and 2 were actually very notable important releases to my knowledge. However, FPS was really big on the PC and games like Half-Life were coming out. No matter how amazing Turok was, it and many other FPS games could never hold a candle to Half-Life.

So I think its really a lot of things, but that timing, being sandwiched between all these other big hitters and than the mammoth that was Half-Life really put a dent in the series. Turok 3 in my opinion was a good but unfinished and polarizing game. You can tell how they were trying to play catch-up with Half-Life and its more scripted story focus with how different the game was. Evolution too was very rushed and Acclaim soon shut down due to other terrible business decisions, killing Iguana Entertainment and Turok with them. I think if Acclaim was still around, Turok probably would have had a bit more of a following today.

So I guess what I'm trying to say here, is that there is a lot of factors, but the two big ones in my opinion is just that overall timing and Acclaim's death. Gaming was changing, what a FPS game was meant to be or could be, was changing, and then you had Acclaim completely self-implode. Overall, just a lot of bad timing and unfortunate events. But overall I don't think there is any "one" real reason, I do think its a mix of everything we're all saying. If there had to be one definitive killer, I'd say the Acclaim shutdown would probably be it. Lots of IPs get sucked into limbo once that happens. We're lucky that Turok got pulled out of it.

So they basically made Turok a money grab franchise.

The Turok franchise was big growing up me and my neighborhood friends would gather and play tournaments on Turok 2, Rage Wars, Goldeneye, Doom 2, Duke 3d/64, and Perfect Dark. Turok made a big splash at first. Its main competitor was Goldeneye Turok was the shit at once too. The main factor is how the company that owned them went under which left no more support for Turok and then we were hit with the atrocity of Turok 08 (I even like the game but its not the Turok we know).

Combine that with no user made content to keep the originals alive and one free forum just for T2mp the game had no support. Meanwhile games like Doom have thousands of user content maybe even millions at this point lol and has had endless support from the community and officials to.

No official and no community support for a long time- When you post fan art you like to get a lot of feedback. What gets you more feedback Doom or Turok? This makes people go with option A Doom. And the pattern is endless. Part of why I made this forum.

No user content. Same levels over and over beat it a million times like me or move on after you beat it a lot...

Overall comparing Turok with Nintendo/Rare only games is unfair. Turok is a true classic FPS on N64 and PC fr the most part. Think about Doom, Quake, Duke Nukem the three games that were mentioned by the lead developer. The more levels and mods the more interesting it may get. But the problem is Turok already took the big silence and painful hits that have already caused people to move on back then.

Last but not least hehe let's just say a lot of people they look for the Doom and Duke hero look and let's be honest there's a difference being Native American :/ Anyways, those are my opinions.

Ahh it's a bummer right. I don't think I could add anything it's all been said. Who knows there may be more growth more new levels and mods and tournaments. Let's just make it interesting. Turok is also one of a kind it's quite particular but it's why we love it.

I think if we stay together as a community, let people join, and produce new content and tutorials, we'll see things grow to a nice stable community. Personally I plan on releasing some documentation/tutorials and custom assets soonish that I think will motivate some people  ;) So yeah, as far as I am concerned, Turok will be fine, as long as we take care of it.

Yeah this part of Turok has only begun. There's quite a few people who have mods for Turok 2 coming also. It just takes some time is all. I think pretty soon there will be even more user stuff. And yeah info/guides/help are crucial in this stage. A few people get scared of the modding and because it does have a hump to learning it some people don't last to long.

Can't wait to see what you're coming up with good job.
